Minutes of Administrative Council April 14, 2016
Present: Pastor Rob Pesola, Melanie Halverson, Pat Gorham, Naomi Schultz, Dick Smith, Janell Anderson, Janice Anderson, Ruth Smith, Robin Priebe
Meeting was called to order at 6:35 p.m. Chair Robin Priebe asked Pastor Rob to lead us in prayer.
Report was given by Janice Anderson, Financial Secretary. Janell moved acceptance, seconded by Pat. Motion carried.
Pat made motion to accept the minutes of the March meeting as written, seconded by Dick. Motion carried.
Treasurer’s Report was given by Janell. Pat moved acceptance, seconded by Janice. Motion carried.
Dick reported for Finance Committee. He requested that WICS prepare a display showing the remaining debt on the social hall project and prepare explanation of the debt retirement. This should be presented April 24.
Dick reported a motion detector light has been installed at the parsonage. It has been requested to have the Clark Street sign lighted.
Naomi presented the Christian Education report. The attendance at the Sunday morning classes is only 5 or 6. Options for Sunday morning are being are being considered. The last day of Sunday School is May 15.
May 22 we will confirm the membership of 6 youth. June 5 we will honor 3 graduates from Mora High School.
There is excellent attendance at the Wednesday Jesus After School program. JAS will have its last session Wednesday, April 27 with a potluck supper. JAS will resume in September.
Janell reported for Youth Group. They will hold a bake sale/rummage sale Saturday, April 16. Two trips will be taken to the Boundary Waters in June and in August. Pastor Rob has secured overnight stays at the UMC’s of Virginia and Two Harbors. The summer mission trip to Heifer Ranch in Arkansas is July 16-23. Pastor Rob and Carmel Gorham will chaperone. They will need a 15 passenger van.
Janell also reported for the Missions committee. The first open date for our church to return to Feed My Starving Children in Coon Rapids is October 15, 4:30 to 6:30. 30 spots are reserved.
Melanie reported for Worship Committee. Noting that Pastor Rob will be on vacation May 1st, communion is rescheduled for Mother’s Day, May 8, the second Sunday of May. Begonia plants will be given to mothers that day.
Discussion items were of need of small piano at the Scandia House. Pat made motion to offer the blonde piano which is never used, seconded by Dick. Motion carried. Pastor Rob will visit the Scandia House and offer it to them.
Pastor and Council Chair requested we establish a procedure in the case bad weather necessitates closing church. After much discussion including text messages, Facebook, radio announcement, and calling tree/text notices, the idea was tabled with the note that Pastor will investigate the procedures followed by local churches. Decision to close would be made in tandem with Ogilvie UMC. Keep note for September Council meeting.
Pastor Rob will take vacation April 28 to May 2. Val Prax has agreed to preach. Pastor has been “elected” treasurer of the Kanabec Ministerial Association emergency fund. He will get training from outgoing treasurer Pastor Doug Larson of Grace Lutheran church.
Pastor Rob has taken a leave of absence from his Tuesday radio show on KBEK.
His sermon series will continue into June. Pastor Kate of Grace Lutheran and Pastor Rob will work on the July 9 concert before he leaves on the mission trip.
Our next Council meeting is scheduled for May 12.
